Outside Comic Con - The Director's Cut

So, over on He is a Thark we have just presented a series on my trip to the San Diego Comic Con, sans badges, with pal Karmin. This post here on Epicurus is the extended cut of that tale, with scads of never-before-seen images.

First, the old:
Now the new:

...which contains photos that are so much better than mine.

I would just like to note that I took that picture blind; I couldn't see through the camera. I'm so happy with how it turned out!!

These photos further convince me of the impression given by your earlier posts: this is the right way to attend San Diego. I can imagine doing what you guys did, given the opportunity. I can't imagine going to the convention proper.

(I used to attend comic conventions in Chicago, and always missed large portions of the con because it felt wrong to be in Chicago without seeing Chicago. Which made the cost of admission seem increasingly wasteful...)

One other thought from these photos: the New York Comic Con is held at the Javits Center in Manhattan, right on the Hudson River next to Pier 76 and Pier 78, with a clear view of Weehawken across the water. So naturally the Javits Center was designed facing away from the river, with a massive wall blocking off any view of the water or New Jersey, and facing towards a blighted industrial wasteland across 11th Avenue. The San Diego attendees who can step outside and enjoy the harbor view and a breeze off the water have our envy.

You got it right, Richard: San Diego is a beautiful and accessible city, with lots to recommend it. Dipping a toe into Comic Con is one of those things, but there are lots of others, and wading to Conic Con up to your neck is not one of them. Heck, I'd go to San Diego without any con at all!

Some day I'll get back to the city for NYCC and we can not look at the Hudson together.
